PRIVACY POLICY

Your students' data never reaches us

Effective August 28, 2026 · Updated August 30, 2026

The short version RosterHelper has no accounts and no server. Rosters, student photos, accommodations, attendance, and sub plans are processed and stored entirely in your browser, on your device. We cannot see them, and we never receive them. The only thing we measure is an anonymous, cookie-free count of site visits.

What stays on your device

Everything you put into RosterHelper — student names and nicknames, seating charts, rules and accommodation flags, attendance records, imported photos, saved rosters, and substitute plans — is kept in your browser's local storage on the computer you're using. It is never uploaded or synced anywhere (the optional board session moves end-to-end-encrypted messages between your own devices — see below). Closing the tab, or working offline, changes nothing about this: the app runs entirely on your device. If your browser's site data is cleared (common on shared school computers), that data is gone, which is why the app offers a Download backup button — backups are ordinary files saved wherever you choose, and they never pass through us either.

What we actually collect

One thing: an anonymous count of visits to this website, measured by GoatCounter, an open-source, cookie-free analytics service. It records that a page was viewed — not who you are. No cookies, no advertising identifiers, no fingerprinting, no cross-site tracking. We never see names, email addresses, IP-based profiles, or anything typed into the app.

Share links

When you use the Share button, the chart, roster, or layout you're sharing is encoded into the link itself — there is no server copy. Anyone who has the link can open what's inside it, so treat a share link like the document it contains: send it only to people who should see those names. Student photos are never included in share links.

Live board sessions

If you start a board session — so students can mark attendance on a Promethean board or another shared screen — your devices exchange messages through a small relay server. Those messages are end-to-end encrypted on your devices before they leave: the decryption key lives only in the join link itself, in a part of the URL that browsers never send to any server. The relay sees a random room code and scrambled bytes — never a name, never a mark. Nothing is stored anywhere: the relay keeps no history, and the board device holds the class list in memory only, forgetting it the moment the tab closes. Board sessions are optional; everything else in RosterHelper works without one.

Email

If you email feedback@rosterhelper.com, we receive what you send — that's ordinary email. We use it to reply to you and improve the app, and nothing else.

Students and children

RosterHelper is a tool for teachers. Because all student information stays in the teacher's browser and is never transmitted to us, we do not collect, store, or process personal information about students — yours or anyone's. There is nothing for us to disclose, sell, or breach: the data simply never arrives.

No ads, no selling, no accounts

There is no advertising on this site, no data brokers, and nothing to sell. There are no user accounts, so there are no passwords to leak.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the new version will appear at this address with a new effective date. Given the architecture — no server, no accounts — meaningful changes would require rebuilding the product, so don't expect much movement here.
